If I just wanted to get a single Assassin's Creed game (as I mentioned in another thread, I don't have the time or money to get into all of them), how does AC2 stack up to later iterations of Assassin's Creed? It's pretty cheap these days, it has trophies (none multiplayer) and from what I've heard it's better than the first... which I enjoyed the bit I played.
How much better is Brotherhood and Revelations than it though? If I'm going to get one, I'd like to get the best one (or at least one of the best). Is AC2 a good way to go, or might I enjoy Brotherhood or Revelations more?
How does AC2 stack up to later iterations?

Unusually Ubisoft has bucked the trend that sequels are inferior to the first game, as each Assassin's creed sequel usurps their predecessor as the superior.
Which one is better?
Assassin's Creed II is about a 9 out of ten, with Brotherhood having a similar score but it had expanded and improved on AC II, it just didn't quite get everything right, that's why it has a similar score even though it is the better game.
Revelations I haven't played so I won't comment on that.
Which would you enjoy more?
It depends really where you want to go as gameplay is much the same in both games. In AC II you have the larger cities of Florence and Venice, the smaller cities of Monteriggioni, Forli and San Gimignano. You can also go into the country, but there is little to do out there, and Vatican city, but that is only for a mission. Brotherhood you also have access to Monteriggioni and Navarre, Spain for a mission, but the game is primarily set in Rome, however Rome is three times the size of Florence from AC II, so it's full of activity. There are also side missions that take you to various parts of Italy, including Venice, but you can't free roam in these missions.
An important factor I haven't mentioned yet is multiplayer. AC II doesn't have it, Brotherhood does. Opinions are mixed on the mutiplayer, I thought it was great, others thought it was awful, read about it yourself and make up your own mind. It can take a while to find a room with other players, but when you do don't leave it and you should be fine.
