I've heard this game had a ton of bugs/glitches at release, but also that nearly all of them have gotten patched now. I initially skipped over this game for not only that, but the lack of splitscreen (which I love spitscreen/local co-op). Now that it's dropped to 20 dollars though, I'm contemplating it, because while the lack of splitscreen sucks, I can't really pass up a game with this style. I loved the Borderlands Zombie Island DLC, and this seems like an entire game like that. I don't know very many people who have this on PS3 (so far I can think of like one outside of this forum, and that's if anyone wants to replay this game so long after its launch)

Would focusing on single player make the game harder, or is it one of those types of games that get harder if someone joins the game?

It's great actually. I loved the game and thought playing solo was much more enjoyable. There are a handful of online only trophies if you are a platinum collector though. But the game can easily be played solo and considering the item boxes and rare finds will now all be yours to collect without concern of players snatching them, it makes for an easier way to build up great weapons. Lots of rare items show up right before a cut scene that warps you out of the area, so search before finishing an objective.

Oh, and this is a "game gets harder when someone joins", but some areas are the same in SP and MP. Actually, if you've cleared a spawn point and someone pops in, sometimes the game resets the spawn and now you're swarmed with a larger number of enemies before. Mind you, the death penalty is minimal (% of your money). So have fun!

Hm...Would you suggest waiting until the GOTY edition releases and getting that, or just downloading the DLC individually? I suppose I may get this sooner or later, but I'm not totally sold, since I hear it's first person (I have trouble physically playing first person games for extended periods of time). Is there a third person option for this game, like Elder Scrolls or Fallout?

idk, i got it a month or two back, but returned it because i had some major issues connecting with friends to play co-op. I only played like maybe max 3 hours worth, but i wasnt impressed with the single player, so id say trying co-op might make it better. If you plan to get it soon, let me know, i might pick it up, because while i didnt like it, i didnt have much time with it so im going to give it another go, and ill need people to play it with

Pure first person sadly (My roommate has the same issue with the game.).

The Arena DLC was basically a boring horde mode. The enemies kill themselves via falling off ledges, and by the time you finish the game you'll have encountered these guys enough times that it's really not necessary. Although, trophies exist, if that's important. Otherwise, I'd say skip skip skip skip.

I never played the Ryder White DLC, but even magazines that said Dead Island was weak say it is a great story and fun (probably cause it's more like a traditional FPS). The only playable character is level locked with a set amount of skills and relies on shooting far more than the original campaign. Since the basic game is bare bone plot, this DLC gives it some soul. But it's crazy short so if you want it wait for GOTY. You can guess the majority of the plot in this if you beat the main game. Oh, and no trophies for this.

My roommate really got messed up by the swaying of the character's body having some motion sickness kind of effect on him. But if you can stomach that, it is really fun game to play. You get to fight with a flame elemented firefighter's axe, or shoot lighting bullets, or shoot out a lighting pulse from a glove. What's not to love?

I guess I'll get the vanilla game, since the arena DLC sounds boring because I don't even like Borderlands' arena (Really like the game though, which is weird, because it's pure fps, but I guess I can play it because I've had it for so long, so I've trained for playing the game for long periods of time), and the Ryder DLC sounds kinda lame too (not a fan of first person shooters. Third person shooters are tolerable, but I still like beat em ups and platformers and stuff better).
Doesn't sound like as bad as a purchase as I originally thought, especially since the price has been cut so much now.

I think I'll give this a try. Worst case scenario, I don't like it or something, and put it back in my game pile for later.

Wait a second. I just saw that the GOTY edition is only $30, and the original game is only a few bucks cheaper. Might as well get the GOTY edition in that case.

I love killing zombies, but I have heard such mixed reviews of this game that I am going to probably pass, there are just too many other games vying for my attention.

I enjoyed the game. It didn't have a great story, character development or even good voice acting, but it was fun as hell just hacking and slashing through zombies. I played solo for about 90% of the game. The only mp I did was with friends as the mp community wasn't very good imo.

Pretty much nailed it. ^

From what I've read, Ryder is suppose to be a hybrid of the original four character with a heavy emphasis on firearms. If you were to choose Purna as your main character you'll prolly get the same experience(aside from the extra story mission) as she is the firearm expert out of the original four. By the time I got to chapter 4 with Purna, I rarely had to use melee weapons.
